Improving topical drug delivery

Alfa’s partner, Gattefossé, provides innovative, safe and cost effective excipients for the development creams, lotions, gels and microemulsions.

These excipients help combine pharmaceutical quality, therapeutic efficacy and consumer acceptability into distinct topical formulations designed to:

  • Improve drug delivery
  • Emulsify poorly soluble drugs
  • Improve product stability
  • Improve product aesthetics and feel
  • Improve process parameters
  • Reduce manufacturing costs

Thickening Agents

For better control of the final product viscosity and consistency, a thickening agent is often used in combination with an emulsifying base. These agents improve and stabilise the product consistency during stability testing at elevated temperatures.

Emollients

Emollients enhance the cosmetic feel and appearance of topical products. Depending on the choice of emollient, it is possible to create a richer or dryer feel, whichever is desired. The appropriate choice of emollient will increase spreadibility without leaving a greasy film on the skin. Gattefossé’s emollients can also replace mineral oils, as they are occlusive and tend to increase skin keratinisation.
