SteriTouch: A new Principal

Alfa Chemicals is delighted to announce that SteriTouch® have appointed us as their distributor for the UK and Ireland for their antimicrobial range of products based on silver.

Alfa will be representing SteriTouch® for their antimicrobial additives for use in paints, inks, lacquers, varnishes, resins and UV cured protective coatings.  The additives, based on silver technology, provide long term protection from microbial growth.

SteriTouch® offer an initial testing service, free of charge.  The testing independently verifies antimicrobial performance.  A comprehensive test report and certificate are also available.

DuPont Zonyl® Surface Protectors

Protecting newly laid terrazzo kitchen tiles from water- and oil-based stains has long been a problem.  The traditional way is to seal the surface which can alter the tiles appearance giving it a “wet-look” that is not to everyone’s taste.

DuPont are the World Leader in fluorine chemistry and offer Zonyl® Surface Protectors a range of fluorinated acrylic copolymers for protecting building materials and do not alter the appearance of the materials surface.

Zonyl® Surface Protectors impart:

  • Water resistance
  • Oil, dirt and grease resistance
  • Anti-adhesion properties
  • Anti-fouling properties

The Zonyl®’s impart low surface energy to the surface by modifying the pore walls of the material with a very thin coating that provides excellent water and oil repellency.  They also allow water to evaporate from the internal area so the treatment is “breathable”

The main products in the range are

  • Zonyl 329: a water-based fluorinated copolymer, recommended for protecting concrete, terracotta and paving stones
  • Zonyl 9027: a water-bourne fluorochemical solution, particularly recommended for protecting marble and fresh concrete
  • Zonyl 8740: an aqueous fluorochemical dispersion, recommended for concrete and paving stones
  • Zonyl 225: a solvent-based fluorinated acrylic copolymer good for protecting terracotta and marble

London to Brighton Charity Bike Ride 2007

At 6.30am on Sunday 17th June a team of keen cyclists from Alfa Chemicals and sister company, RIW, took part in this year’s London to Brighton Bike Ride. Organised by the British Heart Foundation, the annual bike ride is a very popular fundraising event which this year attracted over 27,000 cyclists of varying abilities.

The team comprised Mark Walker, Matthew Miles, Adam Jervis, Bob Burgess, Stephen Evans, Martin Radford, Trevor and Lucy Mathers and Sam Hedges.

Each of the participants completed the gruelling 54 mile course from Clapham to Brighton, raising over £1,000 for the charity.

The morning began with everyone meeting in Maidenhead at 4.30am to catch the minibus and transit van driven by Sara Bergstedt, a customer of ours who was kindly persuaded to get up very early on a Sunday morning to help out, and Louise Mesens.

The team arrived at the start line at 6.30am and began the 54 mile bike ride.  After a fantastic effort (and I hear a few hot dogs!) the whole team finished by lunchtime and earned themselves a well deserved drink in the pub.

Congratulations to the team for their hard work and success and thank you to everyone who has made a generous sponsorship pledge.

DuPont ZonylŽ PTFE Fluoroadditives

DuPont ZonylŽ PTFE Fluoroadditives are finely divided white powders of PTFE resin. They affect behaviour of many materials without reacting with them and their size and morphology makes them easy to incorporate into paints, inks and adhesives.

ZonylŽ PTFE Fluoroadditives are high melting, hydrophobic and inert to nearly all solvents and chemicals. They don’t discolour or degrade in sunlight or high temperature (-190 to +260 deg. C) and offer good lot-to-lot uniformity.

In inks ZonylŽ PTFE Fluoroadditives provide:

  • Improved rub and scuff resistance
  • Improved slip and surface smoothness
  • Help to protect the printed image

In coatings ZonylŽ PTFE Fluoroadditives impart:

  • Enhanced abrasion, scratch and scuff resistance
  • Enhanced anti-stick and low-friction behaviour
  • Surface modification to enhance mould release, wear or frictional properties

ZonylŽ PTFE Fluoroadditives are different from TeflonŽ PTFE, which is used for moulding and extrusion, because they have:

  • Lower molecular weight
  • Smaller particle size (2-20pm)
  • Different particle shapes and morphology

The usage rate in Inks is 1-3% and in coatings 1-5% (although in a self-polishing, anti-fouling marine paint it can be up to 30%). The main ZonylŽ PTFE fluoroadditives grades are detailed below.

ZonylŽ MP1100
Small particle powder especially suitable for improving performance of inks e.g. flexo, gravure and coatings e.g. solvent-based paint

ZonylŽ MP1200
Easy to disperse non-agglomerated small-particle powder for improving the performance of coatings and inks e.g. Litho

ZonylŽ MP1400
Non-agglomerated powder conforming to a broad range of FDA regulations for coatings and inks e.g. Litho

ZonylŽ PTFE TE-3887
Aqueous dispersion of hydrophobic colloid containing about 60% low molecular weight PTFE for coatings e.g. water-bourne systems

TeflonŽ PTFE TE-3893
General purpose aqueous dispersion of hydrophobic colloid containing 60% PTFE resin for coatings applications

New Reactivity JEFFAMINEŽ Polyetheramines

JEFFAMINEŽ SD-2001 and JEFFAMINEŽ EDR-176 are recent developments of Huntsmans JEFFAMINEŽ Polyetheramines range. JEFFAMINEŽ EDR-176 is more reactive then the standard polyetheramines and IPDA which is particularly useful for epoxy curing at low temperatures and polyamide preparation. JEFFAMINEŽ SD-2001 is less reactive then standard polyetheramines making it useful as a chain extender in polyureas and polyurethanes for example.

JEFFAMINEŽ EDR-176 Polyetheramine provides excellent mechanical properties and impact & thermal shock resistance to cured resins. In epoxy coatings and floor systems the JEFFAMINEŽ EDR-176 can be used for partial replacement of fast amine curatives e.g. TMD. It should be adducted to make it more useful in coatings because the adducts improve the curing performance at lower temperatures.

JEFFAMINEŽ SD-2001 contains secondary amine groups which provide slower reactions then primary amine groups. This is useful for chain extender properties required in polyurethanes and polyureas. JEFFAMINEŽ SD-2001 can also be used as a curing agent/cross-linker in aliphatic and aromatic polyurethane and polyurea for adhesive, coating and elastomer applications.
