Silver content in silver anti-microbials is not important

Nick Corlett joins us from SteriTouch to discuss common misconceptions when selecting silver anti-microbials
Formulators often dismiss a silver anti-microbial based on the level of silver it contains. A good reason?
No, there are more important considerations.
We spoke to Nick Corlett, Director at
SteriTouch who manufacture silver-based antimicrobial additives about the common misconceptions:
Why isn't the silver level important?
Nick: We are often asked about the level of silver in our
SteriTouch silver antimicrobial additives. If the silver level is less than another product offered the reaction has, on occasions, been that our antimicrobial will be less effective at the same concentration. That’s largely untrue.
Pre-judging the suitability of the silver-based additive based on the silver content itself is less important than the:
- Type of carrier
- Material in which the additive will be used
- Environmental conditions etc.
Similarly, the assumption that additives with a large particle size will affect clarity, that smaller = better, can also mislead formulators. A large particle with a closely matched refractive index will generally be a better solution than a tiny particle with an refractive index that’s miles off!
So how can we avoid dismissing an additive?
Nick: Talk to Alfa & to us, involve us at an early stage and we can help you choose the right anti-microbial additive for your system and reduce the amount of lab work needed, therefore saving time and effort.
