New multi-functional additive from DuPont to improve surface repellency and reduce amounts of other additives used

DuPont’s new case study shows Capstone FS-61 can decrease the costs of paints and improve dirt pick-up resistance in acrylic, styrene acrylic and polyvinyl acetate based coatings.  Adding Capstone FS-61 at the grind and let-down stages means defoaming additives can be eliminated and other hydrophilic additives can be reduced.

Decreasing cost while improving coating performance is difficult.  Capstone FS-61 is a multi-functional additive providing anti-blocking, oil repellency and dirt pick-up resistance.  The study shows that by using the additive at the grinding and let-down stages the defoaming additive can be removed and other hydrophilic additives reduced e.g. hydrocarbon surfactants, silicone & wax-based anti-blocks, levelling agents and plasticisers. 

Capstone FS-61 is only used in tiny amounts, addition at just 200-300ppm active ingredient into the wet paint formulations.  This also impacts on the amount of other additives needed in the paint.

Improving surface repellency makes the coating easier to clean, removing both oil & water-based stains more effectively.  As a fluorosurfactant Capstone FS-61 imparts low aqueous surface tensions to the end-product which gives:
  • Good oily soil cleanability
  • Good dirt pick up resistance (DPR)
  • High contact angle
Capstone FS-61 is a VOC-free, APEO-free water-based  anionic fluorosurfactant.
