Waxes

Waxes are any wax-like solid (natural or synthetic) or liquid. Key properties include being malleable at room temperature and hydrophobicity.

Waxes come from many sources including petroleum/hydrocarbon e.g. paraffin wax; microcrystalline wax and synthetic e.g. polyethylene wax. Microcrystalline waxes are tougher, more flexible and tend to have higher melting points then paraffin waxes. The fine crystal structure means the wax can bind to solvents and oils preventing sweating-out. Fully refined paraffin waxes are natural, mineral waxes that are non-reactive, non-toxic and biodegradable and compostable. Petrolatum waxes are natural, mineral waxes from petroleum that are microcrystalline in nature and a semi-solid at room temperature.
